What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
