Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
