A large-scale rescue and recovery mission is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated boats carrying relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search and Rescue Missions Initiated

Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of 9 personnel, per a military release.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the navy said.

Background of Aid to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation endures repeated national electricity failures.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort stated.

The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their consular staff.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Recent Aid Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, called "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and food.

Broader Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50k operations called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Diplomatic pressure have increased over the past months, with statements from different representatives underscoring the delicate situation regarding relations.

In response to previous statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using all of the resources at its command to find the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
