A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us verify the footage.
We are checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the images were from was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
