This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and declared their relationship were “immune to outside influence.”

A Message Aimed at the United States

This affirmation, delivered Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have sought to compel New Delhi into scaling back its historical ties with Moscow. The context comes after recent US actions, such as the introduction of tariffs on India due to its purchase of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a trustworthy exporter of oil and gas and everything needed for the advancement of India’s energy sector,” Putin stated. “Moscow stands willing to persist in securing the steady delivery of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not referencing crude specifically, echoed the sentiment by noting that “a stable energy base has been a key and vital foundation of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

Prior to the meeting, in a TV appearance, Putin had criticized US interference over India's oil imports. The president questioned, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, why shouldn’t India claim the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival was his initial trip to India following the start of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations made a visible show to project that the personal rapport between the heads of state remained intact.

An Unusual Reception

Employing an unusual gesture, the Indian PM met Putin right off the plane. The two embraced warmly akin to old friends before holding a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

He referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “based on shared respect and strong faith.”
