Weather experts are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are due to be cold, so warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
