The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with player absences after confirming that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The German forward has been sidelined since the summer following an operation on his knee. Originally slated to come back earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when stepping up his rehabilitation and could not progress “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This news creates a tactical puzzle for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also available post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Remain

Further fitness issues surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in the backline for the table-toppers.

Arteta believes the substantial investment on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a much stronger position to deal with such setbacks.

Questioned if more options was helping their title quest, his response was positive. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Star

Commenting on the setback noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the next level and now it appears like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, for me, I value highly for his contributions to the team, but his character, his personality. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”
