California is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is enduring water scarcity. This milestone follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Map Shows An Absence of Drought

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change came after a period of above-normal rainfall that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta well above their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a local meteorologist.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status included intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to extensive inundation, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were deemed unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with having no water worries. Latest data of the high-elevation snow place it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's usable water as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
