Authorities mentioned they could not remove the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a large art piece of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, facing with one count of damaging property.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the local council explained that surveillance video showed a individual putting fake eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

The accused did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was ill, according to media sources, with the judge advising her to find a lawyer before her next court date in December.

A day after the reported event, the city leader stated that restoration to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our community who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

She said the local government would seek the “substantial” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.

When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and design.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork depicts a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
