Anthony Barry Explains The Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated to assist Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a standing with creative training and great man-management. His club career led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Obsession with Details
Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights the England collective and avoids language like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
Barry describes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. We must to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the flexibility, the physicality, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a system that lets them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.
“There are emotional wins available to trainers in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are focusing to increase tempo through midfield.”
Passion for Progress
Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried regarding the final talk, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered the most challenging environments available to him to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed nearly all assistants except Barry.
Lampard’s successor with the club took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. English football's governing body see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
