An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
